President Trump called a Moscow visit by the CIA director 'semi-routine.' Within the hour the chyrons had it as a scandal, a reset, a secret, a betrayal, and — if you waited long enough — a nothingburger they had been first to question.
Here is the adult version. Great powers talk, even when they are not sending each other Christmas cards. Intelligence channels exist so presidents are not guessing. The last crowd treated Russia like a costume party and China like a climate partner. This crowd treats both like files. That is not softness. That is a job.
If the visit was operationally sensitive, you will not read the details on this site and you should not read them on a phone in a grocery line either. What you can read is the President's posture: he is not performing anxiety for a panel. He is running a country that still has to deal with the world as it is.
Spill the Beans, then: the freakout is the tell. When the press decides a sentence is the story, it is usually because the actual story — a President who will talk to anyone and get rolled by no one — does not fit the house blend. Drink ours instead.
